Most people start this journey with a physical goal in mind - lose 20 lbs, improve stamina, etc. These are what I call “outcome-based goals”. I think of them as the flags that determine where we’re at in our journey. They’re valuable in that they give us some indication of how far we’ve been and how far we need to go, but at the end of the day they don’t really matter that much. As the saying goes, it’s all about the journey, not the destination.
But what does that actually mean? Over the years, I’ve accomplished a fair amount of goals. And the truth is, most of the time, I don’t feel all that different. Maybe there’s a sense of pride, for a moment, but pretty soon after, there’s this feeling of “ok, I’m here…now where do I go?” Because of that, my perspective on goals has changed over the years.
